Understand the purpose, trigger and target of an automation before enabling it, then verify the real behaviour in the affected area.

Read the automation as a behaviour

Before changing the enabled state, identify the event that starts the automation, any required condition and the devices or area it can change.

Enable and verify

  1. Open the automation from the relevant module.
  2. Review its description and affected area.
  3. Enable it once and confirm that the new state is saved.
  4. Reproduce the trigger under safe conditions.
  5. Verify the affected device state and check whether another automation could have produced the same result.

Do not use a live safety or alarm scenario as the first test of an unverified automation.
